China's Zhejiang to introduce index on food safety measures

China's Zhejiang will introduce an index for stringent food quality monitoring this year.

The comprehensive index which focuses on the quality of each staple food will be issued on the local government website, according to the province's Food and Drug Administration.

Zhejiang's food safety watchdog aims to examine different foods throughout the province on a regular basis.

The plan for the index is in line with the four-month nationwide campaign to improve the quality of goods and food safety, launched by the central government in August 2007.

The campaign will look into farm produce, processed food, catering sector, drugs, pork, imported and exported goods and products linked to human safety and health.
