Australia's QAF to increase pig inventories

Australia's largest pork producer QAF meats, is increasing sow numbers in the face of a shortage in pork supplies.

The company, which produces 20 percent of Australia's national pork volume, has piggeries in Victoria and southern New South Wales.

The company disposed 16,000 sows last year, but pork shortages and low grain prices have given the company the opportunity to expand.

QAF meats managing director Paul Pattison said he has not ruled out future cuts due to the global economic downturn.

Pattison said they see pig prices quite encouraging in the next two years.
