UK milk production at 34-year low

UK's milk production in November was the lowest in 34 years, according to latest Rural Payments Agency figures.

Last month's UK wholesale milk deliveries totalled 982.2 million litres, 31.8 million litres below the same time last year and 40 million litres above the 941 million litre-low record in November 1974.

Cumulative production for 2008/09 now stands at 8,635 million litres, 229 million litres down compared to November 2007.

National Farmers Union chief dairy adviser Hayley Campbell-Gibbons said that it is a harsh reminder of the pressures and lack of confidence on dairy farms at the moment.
