Vietnam to import 70,000 tonnes of meat in 2012

As the country's production output next year will not be enough for the country's consumption, Vietnam is forecast to import 70,000 tonnes of meat in 2012 to supply for the local demand, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The ministry also forecast that Vietnam's production output of live animals will rise 6.2% on year to 4.7 million tonnes in 2012, comprising of 3.3 million tonnes of pigs, up 4.5%, 772,000 tonnes of poultry, up 12% and 343,000 tonnes of cattle, up 11%.

The country's output of buffalos will increase 3% from 2010 to 91,000 tonnes in 2012.

The local consumption of meat will be 3.3 million tonnes, rising 7% from that this year. The country has to import between 60,000 tonnes and 70,000 tonnes of meat in 2012 to fill the gap between production output and the consumption, the ministry said.
