UK organic farm offers selenium-enriched eggs

British organic farm Barrington Park Estate is set to become the first producer to offer selenium-enriched eggs in UK.

Farm manager and organic egg producer Patrick Bourns said the 16,000-bird unit in Oxfordshire will provide first eggs with selenium which is also good for chickens.

Selling organic eggs will make the company stay ahead of the competition, Bourns said.

Selenium is a trace mineral acknowledged to be essential to good health. The selenium is added to the birds' feed made by the global feed company Alltech.

Customers are not being asked to pay more for the selenium-enriched eggs, which are due to be promoted in a few weeks' time, but the move will add value to the product. The eggs will be marketed in newly designed boxes.
