Low beef imports threaten beef supplies in the Philippines

The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Thursday (Dec 4, 2008), that there might be a possible shortage in beef supply during the Christmas season, but was quick to add that this should not be used to justify increases in beef prices in local markets.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the looming shortage is caused by low beef supplies sourced from abroad.

Yap assured that the department will monitor markets and commercial establishments to prevent vendors from "taking advantage" of the low supply of beef.

He also noted that there is an abundant supply of pork and poultry products, which may be used as substitutes for beef during the Yuletide festivities.
