Brazil remains the biggest beef exporter in South America
Brazil continues to dominate beef exports from the Mercosur bloc, and the USDA expects this trend to continue with Brazilian total exports to increase by 1%, UK Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board reported.
Beef exports from other key South American countries are expected to decline by up to 3% in total exports.
Recent trends are still evident when examining the shifting dynamics of trade flows; for example, Brazil has increased its exports of fresh and frozen beef to China by 30% so far this year compared to the same period in 2021.
Brazil is anticipated to gain market share due to slight declines in North American beef production, even though China's demand for beef is anticipated to soften in 2023.
Brazil is also the biggest exporter of beef from South America to the UK. Although there have been some notable increases since 2017, this period has been very unsettling for South American beef imports, with the impact of both Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic on the levels of imports.
Longer term, Brazilian fresh and frozen beef imports are returning to levels that are nearly the same as those of 2013 and 2014. In terms of larger product categories, processed beef (including corned beef) has decreased by 1,200 tonnes in the past year.
