Brazil chicken exports to reach 3.7 million tonnes in 2008

Brazilian chicken exports are seen to reach 3.7 million tonnes in 2008, below original expectation of 4 million tonnes, Brazil's Chicken Exporters Association, or ABEF, said on Tuesday (December 2).

Although the global credit crunch has hit exports to markets such as Russia, Japan and the Middle East, Brazilian chicken shipments this year should still remain above the 3.3 million tonnes in 2007, ABEF said in a press release.

Moreover, Brazil should record a rise of 5 percent in chicken exports in 2009 compared to 2008, after a slow first quarter, said ABEF's president Francisco Turra.

Brazil exported 220,000 tonnes of chicken in November compared to 299,000 tonnes the same month a year ago, ABEF said.

Brazil is the world's No.1 chicken exporter.
