China 2009 commercial feedmeal output to rise 5 percent, reach 130 million tonnes

China's feedmeal production for commercial use is expected to rise 5 percent and reach 130 million tonnes this year, despite the melamine issue's impact, the Ministry of Agriculture said over the weekend.

The growth was aided by a big jump in pig feedmeal demand and a slight rise in poultry feedmeal demand, said the ministry in a statement published on its web site.

The detection of the presence of melamine in eggs and milk earlier this year raised nationwide concerns over food safety, damping the consumption of poultry and milk.

Feedmeal processing companies face a greater challenge from safety issues and the ministry aims to strengthen its monitoring of the sector, it said.
