Grain demand in China to rise 2.5 million tonnes per annum

China's grain demand will increase by 2.5 million tonnes per annum, an official from the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Consumption of edible oil and meat will grow one million tonnes and two million tonnes per year respectively, Zhang Hongyu, director of industry policy and regulation, said in an article published on the official People's Daily Friday (Nov 25).

Annual consumption of grain, edible oil and meat is now at 550 million tonnes, 24 million tonnes and 80 million tonnes respectively, he said.

China must aim for self-sufficiency in grains, cotton and sugar, he said.

The ministry earlier reiterated its food security bottom-line of 95% self-sufficiency in grain between 2011 and 2015, but grain imports as a percentage of domestic consumption have already exceeded 10%.
