China to accept import applications for Brazil beef certified before Sep 4

Chinese customs updated its website on Tuesday to say that it accept import applications for Brazilian beef that has been granted a sanitary certificate prior to September 4, Reuters reported.

Brazil had suspended exports of beef to China on September 4 after detecting two cases of atypical mad cow disease but meat that was already at ports continued to be exported, with most of it unable to clear Chinese customs.

It was not immediately clear how long the acceptance of import applications would take, or the quantity of beef imports that was affected.

Brazil is China's top supplier of beef, making up about 40% of its imports.
