Australian wheat exports up 25% in 2010-11

 
 

Australia's wheat exports in the last marketing year reached a record 18.5 million tonnes or AUD5.5 billion (US$5.4 million), up 25% from 14.8 million tonnes compared in 2009-10 and 500,000 tonnes more than in 2003-04 record, Wheat Exports Australia said Tuesday (Nov 22).

 

Exports in the last marketing year ended September 30, 2011, comprised 16.3 million tonnes of wheat shipped in bulk, a 35% rise on year, and 2.2 million tonnes of non-bulk exports, nearly all exported in shipping containers, the WEA said in a statement.

 

Of the 25 accredited exporters, 19 shipped bulk wheat in 2010-11 to a total of 36 countries.

 

Asia continues to provide the major markets for Australian bulk wheat, with a 38% on year total rise in shipments to 10.8 million tonnes in 2010-11. Indonesia was the top buyer with 3.5 million tonnes, followed by Vietnam with 1.4 million tonnes and South Korea with 1.3 million tonnes, it said.
