Japan to vote on trade deal which would lower tariffs on US beef
The lower house of Japan's parliament will take up the full trade deal with the United States on November 22, with the full body voting next week.
South Dakota Cattlemen's Association president Steve Ollerich said having the tariffs on US beef lowered and brought in line with countries that are part of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) levels the playing field for US cattle producers.
He added that, once on equal ground, the US has an immediate advantage due to the quality of its beef and preference by Japanese consumers.
According to Ollerich, once the full agreement is ratified by Japan, it will benefit all US agricultural products.
The first phase of the US-Japan bilateral deal was signed in late September.
