US, Russia haven't reached agreement on '09 meat quotas
Russian and US trade officials met last week to discuss the possibility of reducing Russian quotas for US poultry and pork imports, but no agreement was reached, US government and industry officials said Tuesday (November 18).
US and Russian officials met at the US Trade Representative offices on Nov. 13 and 14 "to discuss Russian proposals to change our bilateral agreement on trade in meat," a USTR official said.
"An agreement was not reached, but we anticipate another meeting soon," the official said.
Russia, according to representatives of the US poultry and pork industries, is trying to build up its domestic production capacities and is seeking to rely less on imports.
