Russia cuts '09 pork imports by 0.2 million tonnes; poultry, 0.3 million tonnes
The Russian government has decided to cut the import quota for poultry in 2009 by 300,000 tonnes to 952,000 tonnes, while pork imports above the normal quota will be cut by 200,000 tonnes, the agriculture ministry said Wednesday (November 19).
The ministry said total pork imports this year would be about 700,000 tonnes, which puts the figure for 2009 at 500,000 tonnes.
The ministry said the cut in imports would be compensated by an increase in national production, with pork and poultry production this year forecast to rise by 8 percent and 16 percent respectively.
