Empire Kosher Poultry to expand output by 50 percent
Pennsylvania-based Empire Kosher Poultry plans to increase the production of kosher chicken by 50 percent.
The production increase will take place on next Monday (November 24, 2008), adding more than 100,000 kosher chickens each week to the market in order to offset any potential shortages.
There is currently no shortage, but market supplies have tightened since Iowa-based kosher slaughterhouse Agriprocessors ran into production problems, said Empire spokesman Elie Rosenfeld.
Agriprocessors manager Chaim Abrahams said production has been suspended but officials hope to restart on Tuesday (November 25, 2008). Agriprocessors had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy early this month.
