Malaysia to use rubber protein for animal feed

Protein from natural rubber latex could be used as an animal feed component within three to five years, according to the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB).

The new product would help the government to reduce animal feed imports which amounted to RM 2 billion (US$555.6 million) annually, said MRB deputy director Dr Mohd Akbar Md Said.

The protein is extracted from serum created during a process of turning latex into rubber concentration, said Akbar.

However, Akbar also said the commercialisation of rubber protein would depend on market needs.
