Thailand keeps eye on nine northern provinces for bird flu

Thailand's Public Health Ministry has placed nine northern provinces under surveillance for the bird flu disease that has recently hit two districts, according to a senior ministry official.

The decision was made at a meeting of ministry officials on early Thursday (November 13, 2008), said Paichai Varachit, deputy permanent secretary for Public Health.

Health officials detected the lethal H5N1 bird flu virus in a dead bird in Sukhothai province's Thung Salium district. A number of birds were also found dead in Uthai Thani province's Nong Chang district, with the cause of death confirmed as H5N1.
