Global 2008-09 rapeseed production seen up 14.3 percent on-year

Global rapeseed production is forecast at 56 million tonnes in 2008-09, sharply up from 49 million tonnes last year, thanks to higher acreage and favourable weather in most growing regions, the latest data from Hamburg-based journal Oil World showed Thursday (November 6).

The marketing year runs from October to September.

Rapeseed oil production is forecast at 20.6 million tonnes in 2008-09, up from 19.4 million tonnes year-earlier.

Global rapeseed output is expected to rise for the second successive year in 2008-09.

Sharp gains are expected in Canada, where rapeseed output is projected at 11.3 million tonnes this year, up from 9.6 million tonnes in 2007-08, Oil World reported, while China's output is projected at 11.5 million tonnes compared with 10.4 million tonnes; India's at 6.2 million tonnes, up from 5.3 million tonnes; and the European Union will continue to be the largest rapeseed producer, at 18.9 million tonnes, up from 18.3 million tonnes.
