Thai egg exports to Hong Kong likely to grow sharply

After the discovery of melamine in Chinese eggs, Hong Kong is expected to increase egg imports from Thailand.

Hong Kong usually imports 22-23 million eggs per month from Thailand, but the melamine scare is likely to spike up egg orders, according to Saneh Kanasuta, vice-president of the Hen-Egg Farmers, Traders and Exporter Association.

However, eggs imported from Thailand are more expensive – it is sold for HK$20 per dozen, compared with Chinese eggs' HK$11-12 per dozen.
