South Korea and US to open trade talks

South Korean and US government officials will meet in Washington on Tuesday to discuss pending trade issues, according to the South Korean government yesterday (October 28, 2008).

South Korea is expected to request an accelerated approval process for exports to Korean beef to the US, and for prompt US approval of its import quarantine measures for prepared ginseng-based chicken soup, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Seoul.

The officials are also expected to discuss the troubles facing Korean exporters due to strict US customs regulations for both raw and processed agricultural products.

US officials are projected to raise issues related to food import safety standards, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, telecommunications and intellectual property rights, said the trade ministry.
