Swine fever kills over 100 pigs in south Russia
An outbreak of African swine fever virus in south Russia's Starvropol Region has so far killed 115 pigs, according to the regional veterinary service on Thursday (October 23, 2008).
The outbreak was reported on Wednesday (October 15, 2008) in the village of Gorkaya Balka at a farm housing over 6,000 pigs. Tests confirmed that the African swine fever virus had caused the deaths.
Last year in Georgia, which borders Russia's North Caucasus republic of North Ossetia, saw outbreaks in 10 regions, leading to the culling of 20,000 pigs.
