Japan's August compound feed output increases 5.4% on year

The compound feed production of Japan increased 5.4% from last year to two million tonnes in August, the first rise in eight months, the Agriculture Ministry said on Thursday (Oct 20).

Output of formula feed, which is composed of corn, soymeal and other grains rose 6% to 1.97 million tonnes.

Japan produces around 24.5 million tonnes a year of compound feed annually. Feed output slipped 7% in April due to the effects of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami but staged a full recovery from June.

Japan, which produces very little corn of its own, is the world's biggest importer of corn, the main ingredient of animal feed. The US is the top supplier.
