Aquaculture industry needs Philippine government's support to fill in galunggong supply

The government of the Philippines needs to support the local aquaculture sector  said agriculture advocacy group Tugon Kabuhayan.

With the government's help, the supply gap of round scad (galunggong) can be addressed as the fishing season is closed for three months before resuming in November, the group added.

Asis Perez, Tugon Kabuhayan convenor, said: "In 2018, the aquaculture subsector produced 2.3 million tonnes or equivalent to 53% of the country's total fish production of 4.6 million tonnes."

The Philippines' Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources imposed the closed fishing season to help revitalise galunggong supply in the country, Perez said.

"They just need support in improving the supply chain," he said.

"Galunggong retail price in Metro Manila ranges from PHP170 (US$3.49) to PHP240 (US$4.92) while tilapia ranges from PHP90 (US$1.85) to PHP140 (US$2.87)," Perez said.
