Myanmar to receive aid in rebuilding of livestock sector

The FAO is planning to distribute a total of 550 of cows and cattle, as well as 15,000 chickens and 60,000 ducks in the coming November and December to Myanmese farmers, according to the local Weekly Eleven.

This move aims to rebuild the country's livestock sector which had been devastated by Cyclone Nargis in early May this year.

Local and other international organisations are also planning to donate pigs, chickens and ducks for the cyclone victims.

In July this year, the FAO had distributed 600 cows and cattle for four cyclone-hit regions to help restart agricultural cultivation.

Earlier local reports said about 1,400 draught buffaloes and cows have also been supplied by local organisations and well wishers to the cyclone-hit regions.

About 300,000 cows and cattle were killed in cyclone-hit Ayeyawaddy and Yangon divisions.
