Argentina's wheat output decreases from last season

Argentina's 2011/12 wheat production is expected to amount at least 12.6 million tonnes, decreasing 15.8 million tonnes from the last season, according to the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange on Thursday (Oct 13) in its maiden estimate of the crop.

Dry weather has hurt this season's wheat crop, which is already being harvested in some northern areas. Argentina is a leading global wheat exporter as well as the world's number two corn supplier and number three soy exporter.

The Argentine Agriculture Ministry foresees wheat output of between 11 million and 13 million tonnes this season, down from 14.7 million tonnes in the 2010/11 crop year.

Meanwhile, the USDA estimates Argentina's 2011/12 wheat production at 13.5 million tonnes, down from 15.0 million tonnes last season.
