BioMar's Ecuador facility secures ASC feed certification, strengthening commitment to sustainable aquaculture

BioMar's shrimp feed production facility in Duran, Ecuador, has achieved Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Certification, marking a significant step in its sustainability efforts, AquaFeed reported.

This certification highlights BioMar's dedication to responsible feed production and supports Ecuadorian shrimp farmers in meeting the rising demand for ethically sourced seafood.

The ASC certification allows Ecuadorian shrimp farmers to access ASC-compliant feed, helping them leverage transparency, responsibility, and traceability in the global market, where these qualities are increasingly valued. BioMar's facility in Ecuador now joins a growing number of certified feed mills worldwide, furthering its role as a leading provider of sustainable aquaculture feed.

Henrik Aarestrup, vice president for Latin America, Shrimp & Hatchery at BioMar Group, emphasised the importance of this certification in enabling shrimp farmers to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry. "With this certification, our customers can be confident that they are using feed that meets the highest global standards for sustainability, helping them secure their position in a fast-growing market," Aarestrup said.

The ASC Feed Standard sets a benchmark for responsible feed production. Chris Ninnes, CEO of ASC, praised BioMar's achievement, stating, "BioMar's certification in Ecuador is a welcome development towards greater transparency, traceability, and impact measurement in the feed industry."

This certification follows a similar achievement by BioMar's Scottish feed mill. BioMar is among eleven aquafeed producers worldwide to achieve this certification, with certified feed mills located in countries such as Chile, Honduras, Mexico, Norway, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Ninnes noted that more than 30 feed production sites are either certified or undergoing assessment, reflecting the aquaculture industry's commitment to more responsible feed practices.

Aarestrup concluded that this certification is part of BioMar's broader commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration, aiming to support the entire shrimp aquaculture value chain. He highlighted the company's long-term vision for ethical and sustainable seafood production, which benefits farmers and the industry.
