Vietnam's pig herd numbers to rise despite ASF challenges
Vietnam's total pig herd is estimated to increase to 26.67 million heads, up 4.5% compared to the same period in 2020.
However, there has been twice the number of African swine fever (ASF) cases compared to the same period in 2020, with more than 93,260 infected animals having been culled so far this year.
ASF caused the loss of about six million pigs in 2019, and about 90,000 in 2020 according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.
The country's livestock industry has proposed targets to reach by the end of 2021.
Meat production of all kinds is expected to reach 5.8 million tonnes, of which pork could reach 3.7 million tonnes (up 6.1%).
