Interest lifts in chilled beef from Japanese buyers

Japan's trade noted improved interest in chilled Australian beef, particularly shoulder items.

In the Japanese wholesale market this week, the trade noted improved interest in chilled Australian beef, particularly shoulder items. Subsequently, some exporters experienced an increase in chilled beef inquiry from Japan, but the market was otherwise quiet.

With high cattle prices and reasonable interest from other markets, export prices for Japan remained firm, despite the substantial depreciation of the Australian dollar from last week.

At Japanese retail, point of sale data recorded a positive result for Australian beef during Japan's long weekend on 15–21 September (Agriculture and Livestock Industries of Japan).

Australian beef purchases lifted 19 percent from 7.9kg per 1,000 customers during the previous week, to 9.4kg per 1,000 customers (up 4 percent from a year ago).
