Philippine hog weekly: Rains continue to weigh on farmgate hog prices (week ended Sep 26, 2011)

An eFeedLink Exclusive

Price summary

Prices of Philippine farmgate hog prices continue to plummet over the week due to non-stop rains and two strong typhoons which devastated Manila and Northern Luzon last week.

Unlike the other week where at least one province has posted a price increase, nearly all registered falling prices for hogs while prices in other areas remain unchanged.

Producers are blaming the heavy downpour for the slow trading and it may get slower this week due to cyclones Pedring (international name Nesat) and Quiel (Nalgae).

Traders are worried that prices won't pick up anytime soon as projected earlier.

Market Analysis

Meanwhile, authorities are on alert on a possible proliferation of "botcha" or double dead contaminated meat as unscrupulous traders are selling tainted meat coming from dead poultry and livestock particularly from the provinces that were hit by Nesat and Nalgae.

The provinces in Central Luzon including Bulacan, Tarlac and Pampanga were swamped by floods last week.

Authorities say some farmers are selling their botcha to recoup losses while some fraud dealers are also taking advantage of the situation of unsuspecting buyers.

Local officials say livestock losses are expected to reach more than a hundred million pesos and farmers are already asking the government for urgent aid to avoid financial ruin and unexpected farm closures.
