Russia bans imports of meat from five Belarusian companies

Russia's sanitary agency Rosselkhoznadzor has banned imports of meat and dairy products from five Belarusian companies on sanitary issues.

The agency said the companies had failed to comply with Russia's sanitary standards.

The decision follows the agency's inspection of the five companies in August. The ban went into effect on Wednesday (October 1, 2008).

Russia imposed restrictions on Belarusian meat imports in April last year, and further tightened requirements for imported dairy products early this year.

Over 100 Belarusian companies export meat and dairy products to Russia.
