US state Wisconsin's swine inventory runs below year-ago levels
 

 
Wisconsin's hog and pig inventory on September 1 reached 390,000 head, down 30,000 on-year and 10,000 head less when compared to June 2008, according to the state's agriculture department.

 

Breeding hog inventory fell 10 percent or 5,000 head from last year to about 45,000 head. Market hog numbers reached 345,000 head, an on-year decline of 25,000 head.

 

For the June-August quarter, Wisconsin's pig crop was 218,000 head, down 6 percent on-year.

 

Farrowed sows during the quarter totalled 24,000, down 2,000 head from both a year ago and previous quarter. Pigs per litter saved averaged 9.10, up from 8.90 last year and level with the last quarter.
