Close to US$1.08 billion worth of meat imports entered Vietnam in first eight months this year

 

 

 

Vietnam spent nearly US$1.08 billion on imports of meat and meat products in the first eight months of 2024, according to the General Department of Customs.

 

Compared to the same period last year, the import value of these products increased sharply by 20.3%.

 

Vietnam's meat and meat product exports reached US$105 million. Thus, the country had a trade deficit of about US$970 million of meat and meat products.

 

Imports include fresh and frozen pork, beef, poultry, and edible animal by-products such as chicken feet, chicken necks, chicken skin, hearts, kidneys and gizzards.

 

Vietnam imports meat and meat products and by-products from 37 countries and territories. In the last eight months, India, Russia, Brazil, Germany, Canada, the United States, Spain, and Poland have been the main sources of livestock products for Vietnam.

 

Concerning pork consumption, Vietnam ranks sixth in the world and has a pork consumption/production ratio of 105.4%. Domestic pork production only meets 95% of pork consumption demand.
