Romania's 2011 wheat production increases

Romanian wheat output reached 7.2 million tonnes this year in contrast to 5.8 million tonnes last year, according to the country's Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara on Tuesday (Sep 27).

"We have reported around 7.2 million tonnes and as I have said before, 1.2 million to 1.4 million tonnes, from small farms with small commercial potential, almost always remain unreported," Tabara said on Tuesday.

Tabara added that Romania has not reached its maximum potential yet. "A maximum potential for Romania regarding the wheat crop would be in the following years somewhere between 10 and 12 million tonnes," Tabara said.

He added that Romania has the capacity to export four million tonnes of wheat from this year's harvest.

"800,000 tonnes have been contracted and are ready to be exported," Tabara said.
