Sri Lanka's chicken, eggs supplies at most sufficient levels, says industry official

The availability of chicken and eggs in Sri Lanka has reached the most sufficient levels and the country has become self-sufficient, said All Island Poultry Association (AIPA) president Ajith Gunasekara.

Addressing the media, Gunasekara said that domestic egg production has increased across all farms, and there are sufficient stocks available in the market. He also noted that chicken production has been raised to meet the country's needs.

However, along with the rise in egg production and falling local market prices, egg consumption in Sri Lanka has significantly decreased, Gunasekara said.

"Currently, small sized eggs are priced at Rs30 (US$0.10), medium sized eggs at Rs35 (US$0.12), and large eggs at a maximum of Rs40 (US$0.13) in the local market," he said. "Retail prices range between Rs32 and Rs40. The cost of producing eggs in large-scale farms is Rs32 each, while small and medium-scale farms incur costs between Rs33 and Rs34. As prices continue to fall, small and medium-scale producers are (seeing instability)."
