US milk production 1.9% higher in August
 

 

Milk production in the US in August totalled 17.7 billion pounds, up 1.9% from August 2015, data from the US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) showed.

 

The July revised production, meanwhile, amounted to 16.9 billion pounds, up 1.7% from July 2015. The July revision represented an increase of 48 million pounds, or 0.3% from last month's preliminary production estimate.


Production per cow in the US averaged 1,895 pounds for August, 27 pounds above August 2015.

 

The dairy cows on farms in the US numbered 9.36 million head, 45,000 head more than August 2015, and 16,000 head more than July 2016.


US milk production in 2017 is forecast to rise to 215.8 billion pounds, according to the USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE).
