Ukraine sows 1.6 million hectares of winter grain

Ukraine has sowed 1.6 million hectares of winter grain, down from 3 million hectares in the same period last year, said Juriy Melnik, Minister of Agrarian Policy.

Melnik said the fall in sowing rates was caused by unfavourable weather conditions.

Winter rapeseed sowed areas totalled 1.08 million hectares, while planning rates totalled 1.22 million hectares.

In addition, a surplus of new feed grain crop will be used to develop the cattle breeding and biofuel industries in Ukraine, according to Vitaliy Skoszuk, general director of AMAKO, on Thursday (September 25, 2008).
