Canada's sow culling programme falls short of target

The Canadian Pork Council's swine culling programme has fallen short of its target to reduce Canada's breeding herd by 10 percent.

Applications closed on September 1, but only 121,000 sows had been culled or were eligible for culling, short of the original target of 150,000.

The programme provides producers a chance to reduce production, allowing them to receive payment for their culled sows and help in restructuring operations.

However, a spokesman for the council said it is not disappointed about missing the target.
