US August Milk Output Decline

USDA estimates a 0.8% fall in August milk production in the top 20 dairy states compared to a year earlier. Cow numbers in these states were down 26,000 with milk per cow down 7 lbs. Total August milk production for the U.S. is down 1%, with cow heads at 82,000 less.

Only certain states like Idaho, Texas and New Mexico showed considerable gains in milk production, on average about 4 percent. Other states like California, Wisconsin, New York and Pennsylvania showed losses averaging 1.85%, due partly to heat stress.
