Brazil to ban Paraguay's beef, live cattle imports

After a foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease outbreak was discovered in Paraguay, Brazil is expected to declare a prohibition on the neighbouring country's beef and live cattle imports.

A source said that the move aims to avoid the transit of cattle on the border between the two countries.

Brazilian beef giant JBS on Monday (Sep 19) temporarily suspended exports from its Paraguayan units, while its rival Minerva halted slaughtering in Paraguay.

The Paraguayan government, meanwhile, has ordered an immediate halt to beef exports for at least 60 days.
