Canadians Consuming More Beef

Canadians are consuming beef in record amounts to show support for country's cattle industry after an Alberta cow was found with mad cow disease last May.

According to the Beef Information Centre, beef disappearance - the amount of beef produced and no longer available in the supply chain - increased 62% from a year ago, as of July. The Centre is expecting an even bigger increase when August statistics are compiled.

Just over 123,000 tonnes of beef were removed from the supply chain in July - a phenomenon unseen in 30 years.
