Ukraine now EU's third biggest chicken supplier

On the heels of Brazil and Thailand, Ukraine is currently the EU's third biggest supplier of poultry, said Konstantin Yeliseyev, the country's representative to the bloc.

This milestone had been made known by the country's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, according to Yeliseyev who added that Ukraine attained its new position in the first four months of 2015.

"Now Ukraine follows only Brazil and Thailand, which are traditionally major chicken suppliers to the EU," he commented.

Yeliseyev attributes Ukraine's achievement to the opening of access of Ukrainian poultry to EU markets, contributions of local farmers, and independent trade preferences, which "actually means a unilateral acceptance of conditions of free trade" with the country.

The most significant demand for Ukraine's chicken can be witnessed in the Netherlands and Germany which saw import volumes of 2,950 tonnes and 2,550 tonnes respectively, Yeliseyev said.
