Traceable eggs would be available to Shanghai residents next year.
The eggs come from hens fed with traceable feed that are currently in use in Shandong, Hunan, Beijing and Shanghai.
At a egg summit, a representative from Shanghai Food Safety Agency said previously, it was difficult to trace the source of any contamination.
To ensure traceability, the OVN traceability standards have been endorsed by China's food safety authorities. The system first ensures the breeding of disease-free livestock and poultry and then certifies that the animal meat, egg or milk products that come from them are carry the OVN label. Certification would mean the details on the production process such as antibiotic and feed used would be fully traceable should the need arises.
