India hopes 2011-12 wheat output to surpass 84 million tonnes
India will aim to have a wheat crop that exceeds more than 84 million tonnes in the crop year that started July 1, Farm Secretary P.K. Basu said Wednesday (Sep 14).
According to Dow Jones, the country's wheat output last year was estimated at 85.93 million tonnes, higher than the initial target of 80.41 million tonnes.
Basu said that good monsoon rainfall will help even the winter-sown wheat crop.
He added that intense rainfall in September has not caused any significant damage to summer-sown crops such as rice, oilseeds, sugarcane and cotton, although there was some flooding in one or two regions.
