Brazil reports record Q2 swine slaughtering, reduced cattle and chicken slaughters
IBGE, Brazil's government statistics agency said Brazil slaughtered its highest number of swine in the second quarter at 12.1 million swine thanks to increased demand from China, Reuters reported.
The record swine slaughter numbers are a 6.2% increase compared to the same period last year and is 1.8% higher compared to the first quarter of this year.
As for cattle, IBGE said cattle slaughtering in the country dropped 8% to 7.3 million head compared to the same quarter in 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and higher calf prices from a seasonal rotation in the number of livestock that can be slaughtered. This is the lowest cattle processing numbers since the second quarter of 2011.
Chicken processors in Brazil were also affected by the pandemic as plants were ordered to close or slow production. 1.41 billion chickens were slaughtered in Brazil, 1% lower compared to the same quarter in 2019 and 6.8% lower compared to Q1 2020.
