Livestock may surpass crop farming in China by 2015

According to the latest research by Chinese Academy of Engineering, livestock, including aquaculture, is expected to take over crop farming as the main segment of China's agriculture by 2015.

Chinese Academy of Engineering brought 22 of its members and 220 experts together for the Study on Sustainable Development Strategy for Livestock. Its report says that the growing population, rapid urbanisation and increasing income will stimulate the growth in the consumption of livestock products. And between 2020 and 2030, the livestock industry's output is expected to take up 52% of the whole agriculture sector.

The report also warns the danger of frequent occurrence of food-safety incidents, saying it is the major obstacle that hinders the sustainable development of the Chinese livestock industry.
