Kemzyme Protease debuts in Asia
We saw in one of your product brochures that KEMZYMETM Protease is available in the Asia region for broilers. With this latest launch in Asia, which additional countries and/or species would be covered? What motivated this launch?
Dr. C Sugumar, Platform Manager, Animal Nutrition, Animal Nutrition & Health division, Asia: KEMZYME Protease is a unique protease enzyme solution. It is based on three protease enzymes which have activity all over the digestive system. The first protease gets activated in the gastric conditions, and as the digestion proceeds, the neutral and alkaline protease get activated. The enzymes in KEMZYME Protease have a pH sensitive and a thermostable coating which makes it a unique concept to deliver optimal efficacy. The new countries where Kemin expands the registration include Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia. Registration in other markets are ongoing and we will gradually be expanding registration further in other regions. We have received excellent feedback from customers in India and China on this product, hence the need to roll it out to other regions to ensure all producers have the opportunity to take advantage of this product.
How (and in which production unit) is KEMZYME Protease applied in a feed mill?
Rafael Zhang, Senior Product Manager, Animal Nutrition & Health division, China: With KEMZYME Protease, there are four main ways to help the customers to resolve the issues.
Firstly, many feed mills are using KEMZYME Protease to improve or stabilize the quality of the feed because it could increase the digestibility of crude protein and most of amino acids. It will help our customers to achieve better reputation and competition in the market.
Secondly, KEMZYME Protease could hydrolyze the anti-nutritional factors, i.e., glycinin from soybean meal and kafirin from sorghum, etc., which could help the formulator to release the potential from these materials and resolve the digested issues.
Thirdly, with the enhancement of the awareness of environmental protection, some feed mills are producing low-protein diet to reduce the emission of nitrogen. KEMZYME Protease could be an important weapon because it could improve the digestibility of both the essential and non-essential amino acids.
Lastly, it can save costs for reformulation. They could reduce the crude protein and digestible amino acids by matrix value of protease or replace a part of soybean meal by rapeseed meal or the other by-products to save the cost.
It has been claimed that KEMZYME Protease allows for the replacement of crude protein and amino acids to reduce production cost. Does this mean that KemZYME Protease provides additional flexibility to producers during volatilities in the feed ingredient and commodity feed additive markets?
Dr. Chandrasekar S, Product Manager, Kemin Industries South Asia Pvt. Ltd: Yes, substitution of crude protein and/or amino acids provides flexibility in using feed raw materials and commodity feed additives. The net value of nutrients spared by KEMZYME Protease is more highly efficient than balancing through feed raw materials and supplementing through commodity feed additives. Since KEMZYME Protease derives the additional nutrients from the existing formulation, it is highly cost-efficient as well as functionally helping in supporting gut integrity and environmental benefits.
Is KEMZYME Protease currently available in liquid form? What is your view of the various modes of applications of proteases: powder, liquid, granules, gel, etc.?
Rafael: Not at the moment. Kemin scientists found that most of commercial neutral and alkaline proteases could not pass the stomach (low pH value) which means that they could not get the targeted intestine to take a role. The liquid form can resolve the issue of loss after pelleting but not the loss in the stomach. At Kemin, we use a two-layer-coating technique to solve the heat-resistance and acidic resistance issues. So, whenever you choose any type of application, you have to make sure that your proteases could pass the conditions of feed process and take a role in the body of the animals.
We also read about KEMZYME MAP (https://kemin.com/ap/en/products/kemzyme-holistic-solution). Could you tell us more about how does the latest addition of KEMZYME Protease complement KEMZYME MAP, if so?
Sugumar: KEMZYME MAP is a multi-enzyme formulation developed by Kemin to improve the digestibility of raw materials, increase the nutrient level and animal performance and finally to reduce the cost of production. It is based on patented multi-amylase and multi-protease enzyme system along with NSP enzymes. KEMZYME MAP mainly serves the mash feed market. With the launch of KEMZYME Protease, we can serve customers making pellet feed.
We saw in your product brochure that KEMZYME Protease increases the digestibility most significantly for rapeseed meal. Do you have any explanation for this, and does this have any implications for the further optimisation of a protease product like KEMZYME Protease?
Rafael: KEMZYME Protease could improve the digestibility of most of the feed materials especially for the plant-source materials, i.e., soybean meal, rapeseed meal and cottonseed meal, etc. Rapeseed meal and cottonseed meal by-products have lower digestibility, so when you screened to get the effective proteases to hydrolyze them, it will increase the digestibility significantly. Kemin scientists evaluated hundreds of species and combinations of proteases and confirmed the final formula.
What is your view of the role of KEMZYME Protease in 'intestinal health and/or antibiotic-alternative' programmes, if any?
Chandru S: Enzyme feed additives are important instruments in developing 'intestinal health and/or antibiotic-alternative' programmes. These nutritional additives not only improve the nutritional efficiency but also help in maintaining gut equilibrium by minimizing the undigested substrates and anti-nutritive factors. Being a broad-spectrum and highly aggressive solution, KEMZYME Protease helps to minimize the undigested protein part in the gut thus minimizing the protein substrate for caecal fermentation. This helps in minimizing metabolites of caecal protein fermentation and protects gut equilibrium, mucosal integrity and environmental benefits, etc.
