Sweden's dairy cow shed space applications increase

Applications for dairy cow shed space rose by about 10% in Sweden for the first half of 2011 in contrast to the same period last year, according to figures from the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket).

The number shows that the interest in milk processing is rising, said Harald Svensson of the board.

The increase is most significant in the counties of Jönköping, Kalmar and Skåne.

By the end of 2010, there were 350,000 dairy cows in Sweden. Milk production has dropped by 13% since 2000 despite increased volumes per cow.
