Saudi Arabia to import poultry from bird-flu-free Myanmar

Saudi Arabia has offered to import chickens, ducks and poultry products from Myanmar under bird-flu-free status, according to the local Biweekly Eleven News on Friday (September 5, 2008).

The offer came after Myanmar was declared bird-flu-free by the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) in April this year. The intended import of Myanmar poultry was the first such move offered by a foreign country on such status.

Saudi Arabian Finance and Industry Ministry has granted direct import of poultry products from Myanmar on presentation of health certificate, according to the report.

Myanmar had suffered several bird flu outbreaks since February 2006 to December 2007, and the country's livestock authorities had continued to call on its people to exercise long-term precaution against the deadly H5N1.
