Indian meat association urges government to ban beef exports

Quraishi's meat traders association of Goa has requested the government to ban beef exports to prevent severe shortage.

A time will come when dearth of animals and procuring animals for slaughter will become difficult if export on beef is not banned, according to the association's representative Anwar Bepari.

"As a result of this (competition among exporters) the price of beef for local consumption has risen steeply. The exporters are willing to pay a high price whereas the local traders are finding it very difficult not only to procure animals, but also try to maintain the rate of meat and make it affordable to local consumers," Bepari added.

The traders want the ban imposition on exports because they fear that continued export will cause the price to rise beyond US$3 per kilo and push consumers away, thus threatening their livelihood.
